The Morgante 2017 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Riserva Don Antonio enjoys a long history and is one of the bottles that put Sicily on the world wine map. Morgante was already bottling this top-shelf red decades ago when the island's fine wine selection was limited to just a handful of bottles. Don Antonio is rich and concentrated, benefiting from the extra sunshine that characterized this hot vintage. Dark and black fruit segue to oak spice, toasted pistachio and exotic spice. The tannins are mild, and the wine delivers many soft layers of sun-ripened fruit. Some 30,000 bottles were released. 94/100 (10.2021) 

The 2017 Nero d'Avola Riserva Don Antonio is youthfully coy, with a showing of crushed black stones and camphor, evolving further to reveal hints of currant and savory spice. Its textures are like pure velvet, complemented by an elegant display of blackberries and plum, while also contrasted by saline-mineral tones and brisk acidity. The symmetry here is something to behold, as the 2017 comes across ripe yet wonderfully balanced and persistent, and finishes with salted licorice and inner lavender tones over a coating of sweet tannin. This may not be a Don Antonio for the ages, but it will enjoy a wide and pleasurable drinking window over the medium term. 92/100 (05.2021)
